On the surface, this is an investigative podcast that examines a prominent, unsolved Civil Rights-era murder. Using the structural device of a whodunit, the show painstakingly reinvestigates the crime, and unlike so many other true crime stories, it actually solves a murder. But White Lies is after something more profound than setting the record straight on this largely forgotten crime. Namely, it explores the nature of impunity and the difficult work of racial reconciliation in a country hostile toward the truth about the past.
