Description

As Maryland lawmakers fought over the future of Baltimore’s crumbling Pimlico Race Course, few knew that inept oversight by the state racing commission was responsible for steering nearly 90 percent of public renovation funds away from the 149-year-old home of the Preakness Stakes. The lack of funds was the main reason Pimlico had fallen into the disrepair that was fueling legislative momentum for effectively shuttering the track and moving the Preakness out of Baltimore to suburban Washington’s Laurel Park – the track where the racing commission had been sending nearly all of the $45 million in public renovation funds.
