The EPA says 32 percent of Americans are recycling, up from just seven percent in 1960. But are those items really being recycled, or do they end up in landfills or incinerators? Join us for a discussion with journalists who’ve looked into this story with widely varying results and some tips on how you can do the story where you live.

Moderator: Rick Gevers, Rick Gevers & Associates
A longtime IRE supporter and now board member, Rick’s a former television news director who’s been working as an agent for the past 29 years. He also publishes a widely read newsletter on the comings and goings of news managers.

Cho Park, Producer, ABC News
Cho has been with ABC News for over a decade and specializes in long-form investigations for ABC News platforms and Hulu. She's covered a wide spectrum of topics, including illegal child labor on ethically certified farms to racial bias in the NFL concussion settlement program, and she has been honored with multiple awards for her work. Originally from Seoul, South Korea, she now calls Brooklyn her home.

Bob Segall - Senior Investigative Reporter, WTHR-TV, Indianapolis IN
Bob Segall is a four time Peabody Award winner who’s worked at WTHR for almost 18 years. His stories have been honored with a National Emmy, a duPont-Columbia award, an Edward R. Murrow award, two dozen regional Emmy awards, and many other honors. Bob has worked in Milwaukee, for two stations in Michigan, and in Quincy, IL.

Tonya Simpson, Coordinating Producer, ABC News
Tonya Simpson is an Emmy and Murrow Award winning journalist with more than 10 years of experience. She began her career producing local newscasts and has worked in several markets. Before joining the ABC News Investigative Unit in December, 2019, she helped lead investigative and consumer reporting teams at stations in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Raleigh, North Carolina.
