This session with Factchequeado, a fact-checking organization filling the gap of reliable information in Spanish in the U.S., will highlight the team’s takeaways from investigating disinformation impacting Latino communities during the 2024 elections. The team will share starting points for your investigations and tools to help with your reporting. They’ll also provide examples of Factchequeado investigative reporting to help inspire you.

Speakers
Laura Zommer, Factchequeado CEO and Co-founder
Laura Zommer is Co-founder and CEO of Factchequeado. She is a recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize Special Citation 2024, as well as a Knight Fellow with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and an Ashoka Fellow. For more than a decade, Laura was the executive director of Chequeado, the first fact-checking organization in the Global South. She also created LatamChequea, a regional fact-checking network that unites more than 40 media organizations in 19 countries to combat disinformation in Latin America. She’s president of the board of directors for SembraMedia, as well as a member of the board for La Silla Vacía in Colombia and a member of the advisory board of the School of Law at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Argentina.
She’s also a former member of the advisory board for the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), a role she held from IFCN’s launch until 2024. She has received numerous awards for her work as a journalist, including the Gabriel García Márquez Award in the “Innovation” category from the Fundación Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericana (FNPI) and an award for “In-Depth Journalism" from the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), which she won when she was just 25 years old starting her journalism career at the Argentine newspaper La Nación. Laura holds both journalism and law degrees. For more than two decades, she has also taught freedom of information classes with the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). She also teaches courses on fact-checking disinformation and discourse at the Universidad de San Andrés and other universities around the world.
Rafael Olavarría, Factchequeado Politics and Immigration Fact-checker
Rafael began his career in CNN en Español as a writer, associated produced and breaking news anchor, among other roles. He then worked as a multimedia journalist at Univision Atlanta, where he led the fight against misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2020 presidential election. Between 2021 and 2023, Rafael won 12 Southwest Emmy Awards, including Daily News Best Reporter both years. Rafael graduated with a degree in International Studies from the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. He is also a guitarist, singer and songwriter, and although he has been away from the stage for years, he never misses an opportunity to participate in karaoke
