There aren’t many beats more important than Florida politics. The leaders of the nation's third-largest state are managing a booming population and ever-growing ties to the White House. Floridians are now facing an election cycle with up-in-the-air races for governor and U.S. senator, along with dozens of other important contests. National policies on immigration, housing and climate change will matter here as much as anywhere.
The Tampa Bay Times is seeking a data journalist to step into this world. One who can cut through spin and misinformation to reveal and contextualize the news for our readers. As a dual member of our politics team and Data Hub, the journalist would produce their own stories and collaborate.
The ideal candidate can obtain, understand and communicate data. They can conceive and execute smart stories and graphics for this award-winning news organization.
We’re looking for reporters who can use programming languages like Python or R for analyzing and visualizing data and who can explain complex findings in clear writing. Front-end design and development skills and Florida politics experience are pluses.
Data journalism is at the heart of our decorated newsroom’s most ambitious work. If you see yourself seeking public records, scouring campaign finance data and explaining how policy impacts real people, apply here.
