Manny has been an active member of IRE and a mentor to generations of journalists of color. As an editor, Manny as sought to prepare journalists for investigavtive work through workshops, panels, one-on-one mentorships and personal training. He was one of the first to push CAR/data reporting 30 years ago at NAHJ and pushed for reporters to go beyond the easy.
Manny was the first person of color to be elected president of IRE, a notable achievement.
Manny also has encouraged journalists to expand their careers with job opportunities and recommendations. He networks with the beginning journalists to the mid-career reporters and pushes them into editing. He maintains relationships over the decades and checks on journalists over the years. His teams have won several prizes, including the Pulitzer, Goldsmith and IRE prizes.
Manny has set the example of Latino journalists and investigative work -- an area that is often neglected in other organizations where he has served, including NAHJ. He's an evangelist and pushes reporters/editors to go beyond their comfort zone. He has advised NAHJ/NABJ board members on ways to get more reporters into investigative work and avoids the drama of those organizations because he's focused on the mission.
