IRE would like to thank several volunteers and former board members whose efforts have made a significant difference to the organization over the past several years. The work of these members played an important role in the success of our just-concluded annual conference in Las Vegas.
- Michael J. Kelley, who recently retired as managing editor of the Las Vegas Sun, arranged for the hosting sponsorship of the 2010 IRE Conference from the paper and from Jim Rogers of Sunbelt Communications and KVBC-Las Vegas. Kelley led the Sun to winning the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service and has been a strong supporter of IRE and investigative journalism.
- David Dietz, former IRE Board president, is a senior writer for Bloomberg Markets magazine and has worked at Bloomberg News since February 2001. Dietz served on the IRE Board of Directors and/or board committees from 1996 to the present – he decided to step off the audit committee this year. Dietz’s service was exemplary and focused on development, fundraising and bringing IRE up-to-date on its finances.
- Mark Katches served on the IRE Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008. Katches helped guide the IRE Mentorship Program to new levels of success even after stepping down from the board, bringing in a record number of mentors/mentees in Las Vegas. His work helped secure support from the Scripps Howard Foundation, current sponsor of the program.
- Stephen C. Miller retired from The New York Times in 2008 after a 20-year career there. Miller decided not to run for reelection to the IRE Board of Directors this year after serving for 12 years on the board and serving as a member of the executive committee. Miller provided leadership as chair of the member services committee and was the voice of the history of the board in recent years.
