Great investigative work is often done in the days, or even hours, following a breaking news event. The IRE Awards have often honored such work, and now we are pleased to introduce a new category dedicated to such efforts. The Breaking News Investigations category spotlights outstanding investigative work done following a news event or development, across all media platforms.
"We think this will help recognize the investigative work involved in covering breaking news," said Cheryl Phillips, chair of the IRE contest committee. "Very often, investigative reporting skills are key to producing important journalism on deadline and in the hours and days that follow."
All work entered in this category must be published, broadcast or posted within 30 calendar days of a news event. The entry must specify the date that this event occurred, and the initial story, broadcast or post must be included as verification, even if this initial story was not produced by the entrant (it will be used for verification purposes only unless otherwise specified by the applicant). Entries may include from one to five stories.
The postmark deadline for the 2009 IRE Awards is Friday, January 8, 2010. The entry form (pdf) can be downloaded from our Web site.
