Description

CJR reports that The Miami Herald, once among the very best of the nation's "second-tier" dailies, has lost much of its journalistic will and ambition. The paper is closing bureaus, narrowing its editorial focus and laying off newsroom personnel. Many former reporters and editors say senior management has aligned itself with civic leaders and community causes. The result is a smaller, less controversial newspaper. Some critics blame public journalism; others merely point to Knight-Ridder's insatiable appetite for profits. (January/February 1996)
