In it, the 50-year-old biochemist said the secret to health and happiness is to cut down on carbohydrates and consume them only in precise ratio to protein and fat. His theory became popular among celebrities, athletes and Californians. A multimillion dollar industry sprouted up to feed the growing public demand for any "zone" product .
