Federal judges are appointed for life. The overwhelming majority will spend their entire careers in the same town. In fact most will be in the very same office when they retire. In Greenville, the judges took advantage of a courthouse renovation to create private offices in which the wood paneling in each office cost double the price of the average home in town. The Greenville News took readers behind the courtrooms into the judge's private areas where rich Honduran mahogany covers the wall and showerheads cost $494 each. One judge hired his own interior decorator to help him with his selections. That same judge spent $1 million to renovate 3,600 square feet of office space.
