Between June and August, hundreds of migrant workers from Mexico and Guatemala leave their over-crowded New Haven apartments to work 14-hour days in the tobacco fields of the Connecticut Valley. After authorities closed down several city apartments, local newspapers wrote stories on the illegal conditions under which the migrant workers lived, but did not unearth the details of their farm labor. This story follows these workers to one of the farms where they labored and exposed backbreaking labor and the farms adherence to only the letter of the law. The article looks at the adequacy of current federal and state laws.
