In January CBS presented charges that Albertson's grocery store chain was forcing employees to work unpaid overtime. If the employees refused to work extra hours, they risked being fired. Managers were told to give employees more tasks than they could possibly complete in eight hours and were rewarded with bonuses for keeping overtime costs down. This led to phone calls from workers in similar situations around the country. In March, the reporters followed the piece with a report from Charleston, South Carolina, about the Pizza Hut chain. Minimum wage workers there found that extra hours were deleted from their pay checks. Managers were again given bonuses to eliminate overtime, and one admitted that she had gone into the company's computer to erase extra hours. In May, Hughes reported on management surveillance at various companies. Taco Bell workers felt their privacy was invaded and that managers used computers to cheat them out of overtime. Tuck drivers hated the tracking system that allowed their bosses to follow their route by satellite. Nurses in a Massachusetts hospital complained about having to wear badges that tracked their whereabouts.
