Description

Series showed that millions of dollars in individual cancer charity donations go to nonprofit organizations that do little but raise money, pay salaries and bankroll their direct-mail and telemarketing operations. The stories looked at several loosely linked charities that are active in fundraising in Wisconsin and nationally, at their fundraising and spending practices, and at how state regulators have dealt with them. Locally, the paper found that a start-up cancer foundation secretly paid a $30,000 fee for entertainer Donny Osmond's appearance at a Milwaukee benefit. The newspaper disclosed that despite statements that $50,000 was raised for cancer research, the event was actually in the red.
