Dozens of former New York police officers, supposedly too disabled to work, are collecting thousands in tax-free disability benefits at the same time they have law enforcement jobs in Florida. The Newsday investigation found that more than 30 disabled cops were currently working while collecting an average of $25,000 in benefits. At least another 10 had similar part-time jobs or recently quit. Some officers said they were forced to retire even though they wanted to keep working. The series found that the New York system had no way to check whether they had recovered enough to resume their duties.
