The brief ban on coffee at the Hazelsen Foundation, an upscale drug rehabilitation center based on the twelve-step Alcoholics Anonymous, set off an idealogical crisis. The opponents of coffee disapproved of drugs of all kinds, no matter how limited or benign their effects might be, while the pro-coffee faction was willing to accept caffeine and antidepressants if they helped an addict recover.
