Village Voice examines ECHELON, a National Security Agency "net" that intercepts messages of interest from phone, fax and modem signals around the globe. The messages are then sent to American, British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand officals for analysis. Originally used as a Cold War tool, ECHELON is now aimed at civilian communications.
