In recent years the trend to adjudicate juveniles as adults has increased. Some states, such as North Carolina, don't reserve prison for just the most serious juvenile offenders anymore, any child 16 or over who commits a crime is automatically tried as an adult. Debate rages whether this an effective deterrent, as well as whether this is the best way to rehabilitate those who have committed crimes as a young age. 20/20 spent two weeks inside a prison which houses about 800 children, aged 13-18, to see what happens to juveniles when they are put in prison.
