From hospital "chargemasters" to GoodRx prescription estimates to Medicare cost reports, there are many sources of information that strive to answer the question: What does health care cost? Unfortunately, they paint a murky picture. In this workshop, we'll talk about how to navigate and use these sources to help you address this all-important health care question for your audiences.

Madi Alexander is the senior graphics editor on POLITICO’s data and graphics team, where she covers health care, education and other public policy issues. She has also worked as a data journalist at Bloomberg Government and the Dallas Morning News. Madi has a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. Outside of work, she enjoys birding and volunteers as a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Liz Lucas is the IRE senior training director and an adjunct professor of data journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism. She previously worked as data editor for Kaiser Health News where she was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for an investigation into a hospital's practice of suing its patients, and the recipient of multiple awards (including SABEW Best in Business and AHCJ 1st place in Business) for investigations that followed the money in the healthcare industry.
Jordan Rau is a senior correspondent at KFF Health News. He reports on cost and quality in the American health care system with a focus on hospitals, nursing homes, and other types of medical providers. His stories have been published by The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Los Angeles Times and dozens of other media outlets. He joined KFF Health News at its founding in 2009 after working for 18 years at daily newspapers, including at the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and the Concord (N.H.) Monitor. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University.
Katie Wilcox is the executive producer of investigations at 12News in Phoenix. She leads a team of investigative and general assignment reporters to produce in-depth and data-driven coverage of breaking news and investigative series. She leads her team in investigating the intersection of the criminal justice and mental health care systems, along with tackling local issues of unaffordable housing, homelessness and healthcare. Her work has prompted legislation and policy change in Colorado and Arizona. She received the 2018 Investigative Reporter & Editor’s Award and the 2018 National Edward R. Murrow Award, among other national and local journalism honors. Katie earned her bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Mass Communications and Economics from the University of Iowa. Go Hawks!
