Life after Excel and Access - the next steps in data journalism
This panel features several data experts from traditional beat reporting backgrounds who will talk about their professional development experiences. What was their next steps after learning the basics of data reporting? How did they discover and learn new tools? How can reporters lobby in their newsrooms for time to learn new tools?
Helena Bengtsson is Editor for Data Journalism at Sveriges Television, Sweden’s national television broadcaster. She previously worked as Editor, Data Projects at the Guardian, UK between 2014-2017. In 2006 and 2007, she was database editor at the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C. She was awarded the Stora Journalistpriset (The Swedish Grand Prize for Journalism) in Sweden twice, in 2010 for Valpejl.se and in 2016 for innovator of the year. @HelenaBengtsson
Ryann Grochowski Jones is the data editor at ProPublica. Previously, she was deputy editor for data at ProPublica and a data reporter at inewsource in San Diego. She received her master's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where she was a data librarian for IRE/NICAR. Ryann began her career as a municipal beat reporter for her hometown newspaper in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. @ryanngro
Eric Sagara is a visiting senior data journalist with the Big Local News Project and part of the JSK Fellowships Impact Partnership with Big Local News. He was the senior data reporter for Reveal at the Center for Investigative Reporting prior to coming to Stanford. He was also a news applications fellow at ProPublica and prior to that was a reporter on The Newark Star-Ledger’s data team.
