This panel will share techniques and strategies essential to landing and protecting some of the most sensitive and delicate sources — sexual assault victims, government administrators, whistleblowers and insiders within criminal organizations.

Speaker Bios

  • Erica Byfield is an Emmy award winning general assignment reporter for WNBC-TV in New York City. She joined News 4 New York in September 2016. Prior to that she spent nearly 6 years working for WSB-TV in Atlanta as an investigative and general assignment reporter. She also worked for KMOV in St. Louis, MO and for KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO. Awards for her work include several regional Emmy awards, two regional Edward R Murrow awards and she was an IRE medal finalist. @ericabyfield4ny

  • Ali Fegan (b. 1975) is an Turkish-Swedish investigative reporter and TV-host. Since 2008 at Scandinavia´s largest investigative TV-show “Mission Investigate”. Main fields varied from religious extremism, migration to state corruption mainly with an international angle often in collaborations. IRE Award 2010+2018/Prix Europa 2018/Dig Award 2016. 

  • Brant Houston is the Knight Chair in Investigative Reporting at the University of Illinois. Before Illinois he was executive director of IRE for more than a decade after 17 years as an award-winning investigative reporter in U.S. newsrooms. He is author of  "Data for Journalists: A Practical Guide to Computer-Assisted Reporting" and co-author of "The Investigative Reporter's Handbook." He works with nonprofit newsrooms and co-founded INN and GIJN. 

  • Lindsay Moran is Head of Communications for the Environmental Investigation Agency, a non-profit watchdog group that uses undercover investigations to expose environmental crime. A former CIA Operative and author of the best-selling memoir Blowing My Cover: My Life as a CIA Spy, Ms. Moran joined EIA in 2017 with over 20 years’ experience across a broad professional spectrum to include intelligence, covert operations, and print and broadcast journalism. @Lindsay Moran
