Journalists often joke they got into the field because they hated math or didn't feel good about it. That phobia can be a deterrent for some from attempting to beef up their data journalism skills. How can you conquer this and what have been the barriers we may not be aware of on this journey, as it usually starts when we are still kids?

Speaker Bios

  • Madi Alexander is a data reporter for Bloomberg Government in Washington D.C., where she covers Congress, elections and campaign finance. She is originally from Moore, Oklahoma, and has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. Madi keeps a database of the national parks and historical sites she's visited, which so far is 38. @MadiLAlexander

  • John D. Harden is a database reporter for the The Washington on the metro desk, covering housing, transportation and government spending. He previously worked at the Houston Chronicle as a breaking news and data reporter. @jdharden 

  • Stephanie Lamm is a computational journalist at The Dallas Morning News. She graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in interactive journalism and political science. Stephanie has interned at The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, The News & Observer and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She is on twitter at @stephanierlamm.
