Journalists often joke they got into the field because they hated math or didn't feel good about it. That phobia can be a deterrent for some from attempting to beef up their data journalism skills. How can you conquer this and what have been the barriers we may not be aware of on this journey, as it usually starts when we are still kids?

Speaker Bios

  • Madi Alexander is a computational journalist at The Dallas Morning News. She was previously a data reporter at Bloomberg Government in Washington, D.C. Madi has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. She volunteers for the Dallas puppy-raising chapter of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Madi also keeps a database of all the national parks and historical sites she has visited — a total of 40 thus far. @MadiLAlexander

  • John Harden is a data reporter for the Washington Post, covering topics like gentrification, federal spending and crime. He joined the Post in Summer 2018 after four years working for the Houston Chronicle as a data and breaking news reporter. While in Houston, he was part of a reporting team that was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News for coverage of Hurricane Harvey. His twitter handle is @jdharden  

  • Stephanie Lamm is a data journalist for the Houston Chronicle. She looks for stories in datasets and public records.  She also creates interactive graphics for online stories. Stephanie previously worked for the Dallas Morning News and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. @stephanierlamm
