Oligarchs, corrupt politicians and organized crime have funneled billions of dollars from ex-Soviet countries to the West using renowned European banks. Meet the journalists who have exposed the scandals and investigated the money laundering schemes from Moscow to Manhattan. 

In this session you will understand how Paul Manafort built his offshore network, learn how ex-president Viktor Yanukovych tried to burn the evidence of his corruption and get advice on how to use databases all around the world to dig deeper into the secrets of the oligarchs in the offshore world.

Speaker Bios

  • Roman Anin is head of the investigative section of Moscow-based Novaya Gazeta. Since 2009, he has worked on cross-border investigations with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). He was a member of the Panama Papers investigative team that received the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting in 2017 and also worked on the Paradise Papers investigation. 

  • The head of Agency of investigative journalism Slidstvo.Info based Kyiv, Ukraine; Regional OCCRP Editor. As a journalsit Anna specializes in discovering hight scale corruption, money laundering shmenes and crimes. Member of the Panama Papers team - she produced several stories about Ukrainian president`s offshore companies. One of authors of Killing Pavel documenary - about murder of a famous Ukrainian journalist - awarded IRE Medal in 2018.

  • Axel Gordh Humlesjö is an award winning investigative reporter at the Swedish public broadcaster - SVT. He specializes in organized crime and digital research and have made highly acclaimed documentaries about ISIS, neo-nazis, the killing of the Swedish prime minister Olof Palme and money laundering in the Baltics. 2018 he won the IRE Awards for "Deceptive diplomacy - UN and the cover-up. A documentary about the murder of two UN experts in Democratic republic of Congo
