Watchdog stories pose special challenges, including how best to prep for interviews, approach sources, handle tough situations, navigate ethical trouble-spots and more. Learn how to master the interview to hold your sources accountable. Seasoned watchdog journalists also will provide tips on preventing your sources from hijacking and controlling the interview.

Speaker Bios

  • Julian Sher is a veteran documentary director, newsroom trainer and the author of six books. He was an investigative reporter for the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail and his articles also appeared in the New York Times and USA Today. For five years, he was the Senior Producer at CBC's The Fifth Estate, Canada's premier investigative program. He has trained in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.   • Hank Winchester has worked as reporter, anchor and investigative reporter at WDIV in Detroit since 2001. He currently serves as the station's Help Me Hank consumer investigative reporter. He's been honored with 3 Emmy awards, MAB Best Investigative report (2014, 2018) and was presented the Spirit of Detroit award for his work to transform a local school. Hank previously worked for stations in Miami, Flint/Saginaw and Lansing, MI. @hankwinchester @helpmehank
