Data can play a vital role in a story, even when it didn't start out as a data-focused project at all. That was true for the journalists on the Boston Globe's Spotlight team who were digging into the Catholic Church, just as it was for IRE Award winning investigations into deaths on the U.S.-Mexico border and intense lobbying of state attorneys general in New York.
