The Bad Bet is about the Illinois General Assembly’s questionable attempt to generate revenue for the cash-strapped state by legalizing video gambling in 2009. Lawmakers passed the Video Gaming Act in less than 48 hours without considering the financial, regulatory or social consequences. Ten years later, Illinois has more places to legally place a bet than Nevada, with 33,000 devices scattered across more than 7,200 locations across the state, including bars, restaurants, truck stops and fraternal organizations.
