Description

There is now a simple cure for hepatitis C. But state prisons across the country are refusing to treat it — and hundreds of people are needlessly dying each year from the virus and related complications.

In a sweeping, two-year investigation, STAT reported for the first time that more than 1,000 incarcerated people died from hepatitis C-related complications in the six years after the drug hit the market — a far higher rate than are dying in the broader U.S. population. "It’s inexcusable that they died,” a longtime prison doctor said.
