Description

The OpenLux project uncovered years of dubious financial activity involving celebrities, organized crime groups, and politically connected persons that had been hidden for years thanks to Luxembourg’s corporate secrecy laws, which — until recently — acted as an offshore hub in the heart of Europe. After Le Monde journalists scraped the data from Luxembourg’s corporate register and uploaded it into OCCRP Aleph, our investigative data platform, it became fully searchable for the first time. Then a global team of journalists got to work investigating the names and companies in the database. In collaboration with 16 media outlets and scores of reporters, we found several instances of elites hiding their business activities from the authorities and public scrutiny. Attend this event if you’re interested in how secretive jurisdictions facilitate financial crime — and what citizens and journalists can do to track these shadowy money flows in their own countries.
