Description

An exclusive investigation, produced by WNYC, PRX, and WGBH’s “The Takeaway,” in partnership with The Intercept and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, details the mysterious death of a migrant detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency in charge of detaining and deporting immigrants. As the Trump Administration stepped up its efforts to deport migrants in 2017, 2018, and 2019, there was a rise in the number of people detained by ICE in detention centers throughout the country. The secretive nature of ICE detention has raised questions regarding the treatment of migrants in the facilities. After a Mexican migrant died at one of the biggest ICE facilities in the country, we decided to fight for public records in order to get beyond the headlines and detail exactly what went wrong while he was in federal government custody.
