Description

Due to a decades-old American policy, hundreds of United States Veterans have been deported after honorable service. That’s because current U.S. policy triggers deportation for anyone convicted of what’s known as an “aggravated felony.” That term can be misleading. It includes even minor offenses like failure to appear in court and drug possession. After our initial reports, a California congressman called for an audit of ICE policies regarding veterans. The ensuing report exposed that ICE agents were often not aware of their own policies, and that in some cases, veterans were not given the proper consideration before being deported. Heroes in Exile is the culmination of three years of unprecedented access to tell this wider story through the narratives of two U.S. Veterans who were deported under this policy to show its impact at the human level on those who were willing to sacrifice and die for the United States but then were exiled by that very country.
