Contributing writers in this education-focused edition: Diana R. Fuentes (IRE & NICAR), CD Davidson-Hiers (Education Writers Association), Sarah Butrymowicz (The Hechinger Report), Kae Petrin (Chalkbeat), Nicole Markus, Alyce Brown, Cole Reynolds and Divya Bhardwaj (The Daily Northwestern), Nakylah Carter (IRE & NICAR), Laine Cibulskis (IRE & NICAR), Brandi Kellam (Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO), Teghan Simonton (Tampa Bay Times), Cindy Galli (ABC News), David Cuillier (Brechner Freedom of Information Project), Sonali Kohli (URL Media).

About the cover: Maite Yuleana Rodriguez wanted to be a marine biologist. Her dream was taken away by a gunman entering Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. One of 19 children and two teachers killed May 24, 2022, Rodriguez’s portrait shows her surrounded by coral and wearing her beloved green Converse sneakers. Her portrait is part of the Healing Uvalde Mural Project — one of 21 murals in the city’s downtown that honor the victims. A different painter was responsible for each mural. Artist Ana Hernandez painted Rodriguez, with assistance from Gabi Magaly and members of the student’s family. ABC News featured the mural in title imagery for Uvalde: 365, a yearlong reporting project embedding journalists in Uvalde. Photo credit: UVALDE: 365 / ABC NEWS.

IRE editorial director Doug Meigs edited the issue.
