Description

The third quarter 2024 edition of The IRE Journal dives deep into elections — with articles covering campaign finance investigations, how to navigate gerrymandering, best practices from international journalists, disinformation danger from artificial intelligence, a primer on using survey data, alternatives to traditional horse-race reporting, advice on framing news about trans communities — and more.

Each print issue of The Journal features centerpiece stories and recurring departments that explore major news trends, techniques behind investigations, outstanding investigative work and core topics relevant to journalists. Print subscriptions to The Journal are included with IRE membership, and members may download archived past issues of the Journal for free when logged into the IRE website.

Nonmembers may purchase a digital copy for $10. Please contact Amy Eaton, IRE director of member services, at amy@ire.org to learn about subscription options.

Contributing writers in this special theme issue on elections: Doug Meigs (IRE & NICAR), Erica Peterson (Knight Election Hub), Carter Walker (Votebeat), David Lesher (CalMatters) and Julie Watts (CBS News), Rashika Jaipuriar (IRE & NICAR), Anna Massoglia and Jimmy Cloutier (OpenSecrets), Laine Cibulskis (IRE & NICAR), Rowan Philp (GIJN), Mina Haq (PEN America), Scott Keeter and Katherine Schaeffer (Pew Research Center), Linda Shaw, Jaisal Noor and Tina Rosenberg (Solutions Journalism Network), Gina Chua (Semafor), David Cuillier (Brechner Freedom of Information Project) and Phil Williams (NewsChannel 5 Nashville WTVF).

About the cover: Election disinformation threats from artificial intelligence inspired this issue’s cover. A series of prompts to ChatGPT produced AI-generated art “that conveys the danger of artificial intelligence technology for public disinformation.”

IRE Editorial Director Doug Meigs edited the issue.
