On April 15, 2018, a killing spree inside a rural maximum-security prison in South Carolina left seven inmates dead and dozens more severely wounded. It marked America’s deadliest prison violence in 25 years. Yet, officials released few details.
The first anniversary passed without any criminal charges filed or new information released. We decided it was imperative to shine light on the historic violence, the failures that had allowed it to occur, and conditions that could allow it to happen again.
