This seven-story, two-day series, titled "A Dealdy Year," dealt with the high number of homicides in 1994 in the city of Bentorn Harbor (pop. 13,000), located in the main coverage area of the Herald-Palladium. A study by the Herald-Palladuim of about 2,700 U.S. cities and towns with populations over 10,000 showed many Benton Harbor residents living in daily fear of violence, a city police department divided over how to handle the problem, and city officials downplaying the issue. The series also explored causes of and solutions to the problem, with input from residents, officials ad experts.
