The California Department of Motor Vehicles wasted nearly $50 million buying a state-of-the-art computer system that never worked. State officials who are involved in the selection of the project's main contractor later accepted jobs and consulting contracts with the company and both the state and the company were involved in a concerted effort to keep the project's failure from becoming public knowledge.
