Description

Within a day of the August 28, 1995 explosion in a Sarajevo market that killed thirty-seven people, the U.N. Protection Force concluded that the lethal mortar round had been fired by Bosnian Serb forces. The Nation concludes, after speaking with U.S. and Canadian Army officials and securing Pentagon intelligence documents, that the Bosnian government was, in fact, responsible for the mortar attack and had likely killed civilians in an effort to rally support for NATO air strikes against the Serbs.
