Description

The News-Journal examined all of the closed cases involving sexual assaults on children over a 2 - 1/2 year period. Using a database created from those cases, it found that 9 out of 10 cases were plea bargained; less than half of convicted child molesters received jail terms; and that judges who did most of the sentencings followed different philosophies in their sentences. The average jail sentence for those convicted was 3.64 years. (Nov. 12 - 14 and Nov. 19, 1995)
