Description

This was an investigation into the story of eight year old Brittany Johnson, who was conceived through infertility work, using donor sperm from one of the county's leading sperm banks. Two years ago she developed a virulent genetic kidney disease. With prodding from doctors who needed more information on Brittany's genetic history, the Johnson's went to the sperm bank asking for access to the donor. They were denied. Dateline exposed how sperm banks in this county do business. There are no laws regulating this industry, everything is self-regulated. Despite knowing the donor had a family history of this kidney disease, it turned out the sperm bank did not notify Brittany's family, even after they inquired into his history when their daughter was diagnosed.
