Description

Average athletic budgets at Division I schools rose at more than double the increases in average university spending, between 1995 and 2001. The escalating costs are reflective of universities' desires to reap the benefits of a winning season by luring athletes to their schools. At most schools, athletics- generated revenues are not keeping pace. Consequently, athletic departments are spending money that otherwise could be used for academics and tapping student athletic fees.
