These stories uncover issues of wage theft, violence and labor trafficking of undocumented workers in the fresh produce industry. They are part of a larger series investigating labor law violations in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, where our reporting has found undocumented worker abuse to be frequent in multiple industries.The first story documents how working conditions for migrant farmworkers have little improved since they were first highlighted by journalists over a half century ago. Despite a growing body of legal protections for farmworkers, a lack of resources has led to little industry oversight or law enforcement. Further, ill-intentioned actors have become more sophisticated at obfuscating their abuses through complicated corporate structures.
