The price of real estate is one of the most remarked-upon features of Silicon Valley — it drives companies’ decisions about where to expand, the battle over preserving green space, and most critically, the mind-blowing housing costs that have become the biggest threat to the region’s future. When a group of Bay Area news organizations got together in the fall of 2018 to discuss a joint project as part of CIR/Reveal’s local labs initiative, they decided to tackle a fundamental but to-that-point-overlooked question: Just who owns all this land — and how are those ownership patterns shaping the Valley’s signal crisis?
