It's hard to know where to find credible information and identify real threats without unnecessarily amplifying fear. Join the Missouri School of Journalism Hurley Symposium in partnership with Investigative Reporters & Editors for a breakfast symposium to hear about some of the latest topics on threats to democracy and give you story ideas on how to cover the issues on almost any beat. The place to start for data journalism beginners who want to learn the foundations of using structured data. This online mini-bootcamp offered September 18-21, will dive deep into the fundamentals of using spreadsheets, including navigation, formulas and functions, sorting, filtering and grouping data, plus other critical skills such as finding, gathering and cleaning data. Using real-world datasets and examples, the IRE training team will help attendees learn the technical steps to work with datasets, along with the analytical skills needed to find and bulletproof data-driven stories.

2023 AccessFest

October 12, 2023

AccessFest is IRE’s annual virtual-by-design conference. The two-and-a-half-day event will take place online, October 12-14, 2023. The conference, previously branded as the DBEI Symposium, will expand on IRE’s efforts to provide more accessible training centered on belonging, equity, and inclusion in the newsroom and through better news coverage of inequities in the communities journalists serve. AccessFest will also feature data classes and more traditional investigative reporting panels that are typically seen at NICAR, the data journalism conference, and the IRE Conference. This reframing is part of IRE’s commitment to accessible training; be it not only to learning new skills and techniques but also in consideration of our members' health, caregiving responsibilities and/or financial constraints.

This workshop will have something for everyone — whether you're a reporter, student, editor, educator, producer, freelancer or all of the above and then some — you'll be guaranteed a plethora of new tips, tricks, and skills for your tool belt, ideas for your next story and connections with some of the top investigative and data journalists in the country. And you’ve got options! Join us on Friday morning to learn the power of spreadsheets, all day Saturday to hear from award-winning investigative and data journalists, or both days to give your career the ultimate boost. A current IRE membership is required to attend any portion of the workshop. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 20 (half-day of spreadsheets training) and from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 21.

Over the course of four sessions, attendees will learn various tools and strategies for dealing with “dirty data”: messy values, typos, incorrect data types, bad formatting and unstructured data. The trainers will focus on free tools and techniques that require little to no coding, starting with functions and features in Google Sheets. Attendees will also get an introduction to the basics of some command line utilities; OpenRefine, which has powerful clustering algorithms for tackling messy values; and regular expressions, an incredibly powerful cleaning tool for unstructured data. The workshop uses real-world data examples and covers best practices and strategies for cleaning data. This bootcamp will take place 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET on the following days: April 16, April 18, April 23 and April 25.
