Ottaway Fellowships

IRE Ottaway Fellowships provide assistance to attend an in-person Data Journalism Bootcamp taking place in Columbia, Missouri.

We will be offering the following data bootcamps in 2025, January 13-17, 2025 Google Sheets deep dive, March 24-28, 2025 Google Sheets deep dive, and August 4-8, 2025 Advanced Data Journalism Bootcamp R

Description

Established by David Ottaway and the Ottaway Family Fund, the Fellowship is aimed at increasing the diversity of IRE’s membership.

Application Deadlines:

Nov. 18
For January Data Bootcamp

Jan. 6

For March Data Bootcamp

May 6

For August Data Bootcamp

Who is eligible?

Journalists and educators of color. Students are not eligible.

What does the fellowship provide?

One-year IRE membership/renewal ($75 value)
Complimentary bootcamp registration (up to $1,250 value)
Travel stipend ($1,000)

Required application materials:

LinkedIn page or link to resume/CV
Links to two clips showcasing investigative work (for journalists)
Description how the training will be put to use for students (for educators)
Explain a data story to tackle after bootcamp (for journalists)
